A Hall of Fame linebacker for the Chicago Bears, Singletary began his coaching career in 2003 as the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. He left one year later to join Mike Nolan when he became head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, and after Nolan was judged to have failed in the role midway through the 2008 NFL season, Singletary was promoted to replace him. 2009 marks Singletary's first full campaign in the role.

Patrick Willis was drafted in the first round as the 11th pick overall in the 2007 NFL draft and he did not disappoint in his rookie season. He set an unofficial franchise record for tackles (174) in a season while also leading the NFL in stops on his way to being named to the Pro Bowl, All-Pro team and earning Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year honours. Willis repeated as a Pro Bowler after another outstanding season in 2008.
Team Info
The 49ers were formed in 1946 but had to wait until the 1980s before they enjoyed a period of prolonged success. Led by legendary quarterback Joe Montana, the 49ers were dubbed the Team of the 80s as they won Super Bowls at the conclusion of the 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989 seasons. They added a fifth Super Bowl championship in January 1995 under another Hall of Fame quarterback named Steve Young and have a perfect 5-0 record in the big game. The 49ers last went to the playoffs in 2002, but will aim for a postseason berth in 2009 competing in the level playing field of the NFC West. With head coach Mike Singletary ready to light a fire under the team, and a young group of potential stars that includes linebacker Patrick Willis, running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Michael Crabtree, the 49ers might not be too far from grabbing a postseason berth.
