Team Info
The Steelers are one of the oldest and the most successful team in the NFL. Formed in July, 1933, the Steelers have won six Super Bowls, surpassing the five trophies apiece lifted by the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers. Their initial dominance of the NFL came in the 1970s, winning Super Bowls in 1975, 1976, 1979 and 1980. They reached the final again in 1996, and then became champions for the fifth time in 2006, winning Super Bowl XL 35-21 against Seattle after winning on the road in Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver in the playoffs. Bill Cowher stepped down as head coach following the 2006 season after 14 years with the team, but they did not miss a beat when he was replaced by Mike Tomin, who led the Steelers to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth in his first year and a record sixth Super Bowl crown last term. That Super Bowl victory came after the Steelers had negotiated the toughest schedule to be inflicted on an NFL team in more than two decades. The Steelers beat the best in order to become the league's best.
