A mammoth quarterback with defensive end-size and one of the strongest arms in the league, JaMarcus Russell has the potential to become an NFL superstar. Russell made steps towards that goal in his first full season as a starter in 2008 by throwing for 2,423 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Team Info
The Raiders have long had a reputation as the bad boys of the NFL, led by maverick owner Al Davis. The Silver and Black began life in Oakland in 1960 before moving to Los Angeles in 1982 and then back to Oakland in 1995. The Raiders have appeared in five Super Bowls, winning in 1977, 1981 and 1984. Most recently they lost the Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2002 season, and also lost Super Bowl II back in 1968. Oakland's recent record has been patchy, seeing them change head coaches regularly. After the 2006 2-14 finish, Art Shell was replaced after just one season in charge by Lane Kiffin - the youngest head coach in the NFL at just 31 years old. Kiffin's new era began with the drafting of quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the number one overall first pick, but the Raiders only managed a 4-12 record. On September 30, 2008 after the Raiders started the 2008 season 1-3 Lane Kiffin was fired and offensive line coach Tom Cable was named the Oakland Raiders interim head coach. He assumed the position full-time in February 2009 and is charged with rebuilding a club that went 5-11 last term.
